Hi Al
You're right and I concur with your opinion! How much better than R.W. Bennet?

Jim,
What is so amazing about John West's performance on the parade square is that he suffered from a major handicap -- full upper and lower dentures. When he was the DSM it was his duty to conduct spring drill for new officers as part of the selection process for the summer contingent performing public duties -- the changing of the guard on Parliament Hill. One day, in a burst of verbal enthusiasm, his dentures went flying across the square causing an uncontrollable fit of tittering among the assembled awkward squad. But with the grace and aplomb of a future RSM, he marched to the errant bits, retrieved and wiped them off, re-inserted them, marched back to the front of the now-chastened subalterns and launched them a 45-minute non-stop exercise covering the entire drill manual. He spoke not a word about the insult, the adjutant was never told -- as was well within his right to do -- so no-one was given the punishment they deserved and we all marched off with a much elevated respect for the man and his standards, which never wavered. Nor, to the best of my knowledge, did he ever cough out his choppers again and now that many of us are living with a similar handicap the incident doesn't seem anywhere near as funny in retrospect.
One other who engendered similar respect, at least for me, was Dan Cox as RSM of 2RCR/3MechCdo in Ft. York/Baden-Soellingen. I guess I wasn't the only one who felt that way because on repat he was posted to what I think is considered to be the most prestigious appointment for the rank, RSM at Royal Military College. Alas, he died before completing his tour and a generation of young officers will never know the benefit of what he had to teach them.

Hi Al
The one thing most common in all these stories about famous "Soldiers" is you could take a story like "loosing false teeth" and it turns itself right around to make us give a "standing applause" for the way he came out of it. Notice he didn't "ho hum around" he went straight to the teeth, picked them up, cleaned them off, put them back in his mouth and proceded to give them a 45 min drill lesson. Of course we all knew Dan Cox. Pro Patria!
Jim
Do you know RSM R.W. Bennet?

Jim,
Re: R.W. Bennett, the name is familiar -- as one would expect of anyone holding the lofty position of Regimental Sergeant-Major -- but I can't say I know him. My experience of Regimental Sergeants-Major covers the last few days of Silver Lee, then Jim Baird, Ken Landers and John West in the Guards and Dan Cox in the RCR before I went ERE and then reclassified out of the Infantry into Public Affairs. I served with Vince Spicer in Germany but he was then the CQMS and I'd left both the regiment and the infantry before he became RSM.
With regard to the new photo you've posted, could that be a (very) young Lance-Corporal Barry Glover on the right?
Cheers.
Al

I believe fully that these are stories that while not the same for each RSM or futre RSM, are common for all...the strength of character, a high necessity and the presence of mind... at all times .. shines thru for them all... and yes that is a quite young Jim Hickson on the right, thanks for getting this board up. it is very interesting and important history and anyone reading the captions will, i am sure see the true material of an RSM, ranrad

Jim,
Well that explains my lack of anything but second-hand knowledge of Mr. Bennett. I wasn't commissioned until August of 1962 out of the same batch of miscreants as Tom deFaye and Barry Glover, both of whom seem to adapt to this soldiering stuff sooner than me. I did all my time with the 2Cdn Gds and then with the depot (is there a punishment worse than seven straight years in Petawawa?), so I never had the pleasure of RSM Bennett's acquaintance.
You were one mighty spiffy L/Cpl and, judging by succeeding pix, you've retained the quality. But why are you in a '51-pattern belt and everyone else in the '37 pattern?
Cheers.

Hi Al
51 Pattern Web Belt was the courses dress for that happy day, 4 Jun 1962 to 19 Oct 1962. Starting with 65 students and finishing with 13 students. That was LCol J.J. Johnston's course (Ranger). Did you ever learn fast or got the boot. That was the longest course I've been on! My Instr Sgt Tapp & Cpl Coombes. My course Instr SSgt Cox.
If you did your time with the Guards Depot you had a good chance running into RSM Bennet.

Jim,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I've just set up a new computer and for something that was sold as "plug 'n' play" it's taken the best part of a day. I think computer sellers learned their trade from used car salesmen -- they both seem to subscribe to the old b***sh** baffles brains philosophy.
Aside from the two-week couth course all newly-arrived subalterns had to undergo in 1962, which included time as a supernumerary acting understudy to a recruit platoon commander where the main thing learned was to stay-the-hell-out-of-the-out-of-the-way, my time with the depot didn't come until the last year of its existence, 1968, so I missed Mr. Bennett. If you'd like to cast your vision upon his glorious countenance one more time, you can go to the Guards webpage (www.canadianguards.ca) and click on the 'depot photos' icon.
I really do enjoy your photo posts. You do the membership a great service by providing a visual record of the army's evolution. But with all the time you seem to have spent behind the camera, when did you ever have time to bend the knee and shoot the foot?
Cheers.
Al
