During the mid '70s, I spent a couple of years instructing at the Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School, and there was an unofficial publication floating around the headquarters entitled (I think) "When Pigs Fly", or something similar. In any case, this shirt-pocket sized booklet was an excellent guide to the customs and traditions of the Service, and I would like to find a copy, preferably digital.
My 50-something brother-in-law is an emergency room physician in Williams Lake, BC, and has made application to join as a Reserve Force Medical Officer. While he is a little apprehensive about how he will fit into the military environment, he is prepared to learn and listen (even to a Naval Officer). From what I remember of the subject booklet, the contents would serve him well in his late-in-life transition from a civilian to an Army Medical Officer.
If anyone can provide me with information about this publication and where I might obtain a copy, I would be most grateful.

Jim:
Jan 76 - Jul 78, and the best part of that time was when we still had the candidates in H-huts. I do remember that your pace stick drill left something to be desired because your crutches kept getting in the way.
You've done well in your career.

Hi Jim:
After CFOCS, a tour in Comox, a tour in Lahr, another tour in Comox, followed by Winnipeg, Goose Bay, Edmonton, and retired under FRP from 408 Tac Hel Sqn in 1995. Worked as flight dispatch for FedEx Canada, then to Salt Spring Island in 1998. Most of my time now is spent with the local Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit as a coxswain of a Coast Guard rigid hull inflatable SAR boat. Good fun, but I'm having a little trouble adapting to the "touchy feely" democratic team approach. Autocracy still works!!!

I believe the booklet you're looking for is actually called "Pigs Have Wings." It was written by our own Colonel Strome Galloway as a guide to new soldiers and officers. The regimental museum might have a copy or you might try the Canadian Guards Association ( www.canadianguards.ca) Pro Patria Al Ditter
