Thats right, Mike Grether. Remember the time he painted his C1 white before we took off to Pet.... He used to live on the same floor as I in BB4, seen him do over three hundred regulation situps one night on a dare...

Think you must mean (Newton) better know as Smokie,  Once in Hamilton I believe with a reserve unit he was investigate for drinking daily at a Hotel during lunch break.  On orders parade they found out his address was an aptment above the Bar.   Case was dismissed.

Great reminder of one of our infamous members. I thought it was Shag Shannessey who sorted him out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Grether did a regulation fix bayonets before being, ah, subdued.

you are correct about the bayonet. remember when he was on the PNR Crse he would walk down to Mountain Lake to sleep every night. The rest of us stayed in the hanger.

Grether use to put a drink on various tables and dare anybody grab them as he would be all over them. I remember when he said he was going to come back some day and shoot everybody on the parade square . it didn,t give you that warm fuzzy feeling on parade.

RSM Shag Shaughnessy was one of a kind, a great man and one of the finest NCOs ever seen.  I had never heard the name Grether but had heard the story of Shag being attacked in his own RSMs office by a trooper with a bayonet.  That must have happened around 1979 or 1980.  I also think that Shag  went on retirement while still the RSM of 1 RCR, this being a an unusual move as most of our RSMs seemed happy enough to complete their tour and to move on to a staff job somewhere.  Shag had been in action in Korea and might have been WIA but I am not 100% sure of that.  I know for sure that Shag was recommended for a commission at least twice and declined the nomination while still a WO and an MWO.  He wanted to be the RSM of 1 RCR and achieved that great honour.  His death at an early age was a blow to all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.  Pro Patria, RT
