Grave Desecrated
« on: December 20, 2006, 04:30:15 AM »

Vandals have desecrated the historic Pioneer Cemetery in Chelsea Qc ,
toppling several headstones , including those of a Canadian war hero
  and his wife .
There was also damage to a flagpole and a park bench .
The cemetery is also the site of a memorial , commemorating Pte.
Richard Rowland Thompson , who won the Queen's Scarf for bravery
more than a century ago .
During the Boer War , Queen Victoria crocheted eight scarves to
be presented to soldiers fighting in South Africa . Four were were
presented to "the most distinguished private soldier" serving in the
forces of Canada , Australia , New Zealand , and South Africa . The
other four scarves went to members of the British regular army .
The Canadian scarf went to Pte . Thompson , 2nd (Special Service)
Battalion , Royal Canadian Regiment  , for his bravery at the battle of
Paardeberg in February 1900 . The scarf is on display at the Canadian
  War Museum .
Of the 13 headstones at the cemetery , 7 were knocked over . The
flagpole was snapped and two flags - the Canadian flag and The Royal
Canadian Regiment's flag - were stolen . A park bench built by the RCR
from Petawawa , was also smashed .
With several  Legion memorials being vandalized across Canada , plus the
National War Memorial , nothing is sacred anymore . "FOR SHAME"
All info taken from the Ottawa Citizen Dec 20 , 2006 .

Thanks for getting this up. I did read it earlier, but i hope all Royal Canadians and in fact ALL Canadians will read this and be as outraged as i am. This act is beyond stupidity. I hope the culprits can be caught, and at the very least be given a forced lecture on Canadian History.. or i should say lectures, as there is far too much history at this cemetery for one lecture. Do these people know what they have done?  I hope police and locals will work together and have a better chance to catch these people. But it does give an opportunity to bring this history to the attention of all Canadians and the importance of not only preserving these sites, but revering them as well. They are all our forefathers and mothers and all made great contributions to our lives today. If any of you culprits read this i hope you would now have the courage to come forward and admit your guilt and find a way to atone for your behavior..ranrad

$3,000 still needed to fix historic Quebec cemetery

Wed Dec 27, 11:40 AM

A historic western Quebec cemetery badly damaged by vandals still needs around $3,000 to cover repairs, says the non-profit society that owns it.

Carol Martin, a director of the Gatineau Valley Historical Society, said only the repairs to the grave of Boer War hero Pte. Richard Rowland Thompson - and possibly his wife's grave, which is in the same compound - will be covered by Veterans Affairs Canada.

Meanwhile, a broken flagpole, Canadian and regimental flags that were torn down, a stone bench donated by the Royal Canadian Legion and five other headstones dating as far back as the 1850s also need to be fixed in Chelsea Pioneer Cemetery.

"The help we need is financial because repairing tombstones is a job for experts," Martin told CBC News Online Wednesday. "You can't put stones back yourself."

She said the base of each headstone must be levelled and broken pieces must be cemented back together, at a cost of about $250 for each headstone.

She added that the society's budget for maintaining the cemetery, which contains 14 headstones, is only a few hundred dollars each year.

The cemetery damage was discovered Dec. 18 by a woman walking her dog.

Veterans Affairs spokeswoman Julie Daoust said the federal department will refund the full cost of repairing Rowland's grave, but not any others.

Hmmm, i wonder if we on this site could start up some kind of a donation collection ans get these repairs paid for??? Any body got some ideas?  Do those vandals have any idea what Thomson went thru... for THEM.. and this is how they repay him...not to mention the others ,who are all pioneers of the area....think of what they did to make our Canada. ranrad
