A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
Very nice, sir. Well done.
On reviewing the history of the Ortona Toast, I was left wondering what would be precise wording used when referring specifically to Ortona?
I would suggest that we need a new toast.
A toast that would specifically, in word and deed, honour these great men and the Regimental achievements on this day of our history.
Hmmmmm.... Ortona! would be rather obvious I suppose.
How bout,
...Gentlemen of the Royal Canadian Regiment ...Ortona... December 21st... 1943....
Of course the intervening space denoted by the ... will be the regulation drill count of three! On special occasions, a drummer could drum the cadence and a piper like our freind Joe at the school could create a nice little special piper/horn scroll for an intro and, after the final words, retreat.
Just an idea. It seems to me that this is special honour, that there should be an element of ceremonial decorum applied, something specific to Dec 21, 1943. I would suggest the concoction should be piped in with an appropriate tune and the shot, as per decorum, be delivered in the customary one shot per man at the table. As it was, it shall be, through deed we remember the spartanness of the moment, the commandeered porcelin cups, the grog, everybody, from waiter to senior man present is drawn into the moment. Then, through words of remembrance, we remember those who proceeded us and honour the sacrifice and accomplishment the rwegiment attained during this bloody battle.

I have started to put together a new regimental website at http://thercr.ca Comments and suggestions are welcome. Please keep in mind that it's a one-man show so any suggestions without the prepared content for consideration may be slow to get processed. Regt Adjt I just had a detailed look at the Regimental site. I take my hat off to you for covering such a wide spectrum of subjects. It will give the future, the serving and the former something to be proud of. Pro Patria H.J.(Jim) Hickson MMM CD (Retired)

George, that is great news..... should we ever meet, I can assure, brother, i shall try to pound back a canteen cup of both the hairy anticipator and the red patch special in YOUR honour. After thatt... God knows what will happen.... snicker. George, if anybody has a digital camera, scoop a picture of the new wooden hatbadge and e-mail me a copy. Preferably with you and ther other Royal Canadians standing proud beside it! I'll post it here so all can see. I am looking forward to your memories of service, sir. Particularly Ortona. As an amatuer history buff, I've always felt that the real story is to be told by the men who carried the burden, who lived the moment on the ground.... I cannot wait to hear yours. Pro Patria! And thanks in advance.

Sir, this is an exceptional website, and I am eagerly reading all about my former Regiment's history.
Although I have left the forces and wasn't in long, I still feel a strong bond to the Regiment I served. I'm only a young man right now, with a lot of life ahead, I will always remember the pride and honour I felt when serving.
Thank you for making such a wonderful website and community for all Royals to enjoy.
Regards,
Pte. RM Gelan Hopkins (ret'd) formerly of O coy, 3 RCR

Very well laid out and informative. How about a "Past and Present" link with some photo's that we can all contribute with. Just a suggestion.

towgunner, While I am not against expanding the photo gallery section of the website, there's no advantage in just displaying photos over what is being accomplished here in the discussion forum. The big difference is that photos here are displayed by the poster doing the work, to add them to the website means RHQ does the work. I will certainly consider anything sent to me for publication on the regimental website, but keep in mind that the greater the amount of work required to make it 'web-ready' the greater the possibility that it won't get posted soon. More importantly, what is needed is the stories to go with the photos. Even with many of the photos that get posted here, the sharing of names and the hints of "stories left untold" are only between the few who actually knew the people in the pictures. When that is done, there's not a lot of appeal to a wider regimental audience. If, however, we can tie the photo and the story together (not just the details of who's in the particular photo) then we start to collect information that builds our regimental history. While the participants in the Photo Challenge threads have been having fun identifying the soldiers in the shots, the discussions have rarely extended to include the "what, where, when, why" of the units, activities, locations, details of the uniforms and equipment, description of the deployment or training, etc. Perhaps if someone chose a few good photos and all the relevant and connected data was pulled from the forum participants, then it only needs someone to cobble it together into a few paragraphs to accompany the picture.
