Why are they there

Hi brothers,

I know i'm gonna get some yellin at because of this.  But can anyone say why Canadian soldiers are in Afghanistan.  I live in Germany now but was a soldier for nine years in the RCR.  I know the guys gotta go where they are told as we did when we were sent to the former Yugoslavia in 92.  But I also know that when we were there we didnt have a clue why.  Then again we went as part of the UN.  Since when is Canada a war like nation?  I hope we are not there because the Americans could'nt spare the man power.  And what is Canadas mission there now?  To help rebuild the country?  The country that was armed by the Americans in the 80's when they were at war with USSR.

When I think back isn't it true that Bin Laden was backed by the States.  Remember the whole western world boycotted the 80 olympics--because the the evil Russians were in Afghanistan.  Now hopefully i'm am speaking to a rational thinking person.  If this man is so evil against the west why was he sympathetic back then--normally a fanatic such as that would never change his spots.  So maybe the Russians were right and we should have backed them then and maybe 50+ Canadian soldiers wouldnt be dead now.  The thing that really gets me is that a terrorist is a terrorist and were the Americans so naive that they did'nt see that back then.  Or did he become the great terrorist because he didnt like the way things were going in the Moslem world.

Now I will probably get barred from this site for what I say now but I truely believe that November 11 was a long time coming.

How can I be so heartless to say something like that.  2-3000 people died that day and when I saw it on TV I cried as well. But after a while I started thinking America bombed that land almost everyday since the first Gulf war in 90.  How many innocent people were killed.  But it really dosent matter because they are Moslems--so different from us--we're just trying to help them--Democracy--womans rights--and we want the oil.

Who armed Iraq in the late seventies early eighties--while Saddam was still in power.  America again--why --was he such a good man--kill the evil Iranians.  Thanks Saddam.  And I believe that if this stupid war never took place and the Maniac was still in power more Iraqis would be living today as well as three thousand Americans.  What has America achieved there--free elections--womans rights?  I laugh everytime I see it on CNN.  In 3-4 years the Americans will leave there after once again arming thier forces for a fight that is innevitable.

We are not the best people on earth although we are very fortunate that we were born in the western world.  Think to this day we as a whole are a very prejudiced people are we better then them--the great democracy--ask the native Canadians back in the sixties and even to this day.

Anyway gettin back to my original topic- What are we doin there--The Germans are there as well with 2000 men and how many have been killed for the rebuilding of this great nation----0----  Let the Americans fight thier war and please leave us with the outstanding record we have by the UN.

In closing I want to say I wish the guys the best--and soldier on

Hello dave.

Well there are as many opinions as there are people in Canada, as to why we are where we are. First and foremost the number one reason is appeasement. Before 9/11 Washington and Ottawa were not on very good terms, after 9/11, to turn the tide and show the US some good will, Chretien agreed to send in a small contigent of 750 troops, but only for 6 months, kind of like a piece offering to the Americans, to show there were no hard feelings and bolster some cheerio between the two. What they planned for and what they got were two totally different scenerios. When Bush went into Iraq in 2003, he asked Canada, among other NATO countries to pickup the slack in Afghanistan. So overnight we had to come up with a completetly new plan, because again, Chretien agreed to send more troops over. Canada got the smelly end of the stick, by the time the other NATO countries that makes up ISAF i.e Germany, Holland, UK, had agreed and picked their deployment areas, we were left with Kandahar province, its a hornets nest for taliban insurgents and the most dangerous province in all of Afghanistan. While some countries forbid their troops to go into combat, they can get away with that, because of were their troops are situated, our troops have no choice, its the gunfight at the OK corral, you either shoot or be shot.

People always ask "Why is Canada fighting and not peacekeeping" Number one, none of us who served were ever trained to become peacekeepers, we were all trained to fight in combat, like any soldier is. Number two. In order to bring some calm to the chaos, we must first defeat the thing that is causing the chaos, the taliban, who are ruthless and will stop at nothing short of trying to kill anyone, who gets in their way. Women, children etc.

One for the gipper. I think we are all in this together, with the excpetion of Iraq, which in my opinion was a very big miscalculation. But as for Afghanistan if we can somehow help get these people get back on their feet to a point were they can fend for themsleves and keep the Taliban at bay, we've done our job and we can bring our troops home, until that happens.....??

As for Bin Laden and American foriegn policy, well first off Bin Laden had to find another enemy after the soviets left Afghanistan, who better than the Americans. Nothing like biting the hand that feeds you, ha, he bit it right of! Bin Laden would like nothing better than to see the world revert back to 1400 hundred years ago when Islam was as he woud say "true Islam". Back to the dark ages. He is so twisted in his thinking that he thinks by blowing things up and killing people, people will actually be swayed to his fanatical vurtues. Some do mind you, but again these are the exceptions and not the rule.  Bin Laden is nothing but a fanatical phycotic maniac, no different than Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin were.
