Daughter of a Royal

Hi all;
To introduce myself, I am the daughter of the late Pte Wm Sheady, who served with the RCR in Korea '52-'53.  My father passed away in 1993, and rarely spoke about his time in Korea. 

I have learned quite a bit from message boards, the KVA website, RCR website etc, but I still have a few questions.  If anyone can help, that would be great!  If my questions seem silly, forgive me, as I don't know all the "lingo" etc.

Firstly, Dad was always referred to, and referred to himself, as "1st RCR" but I see in his service record that he went frequently between the 1st and 3rd RCR while in Korea.  What was the reason for this? 

Secondly, why the "cherry beret"?  Dad marched in the parades and wore the scarlet beret, but I'm not entirely sure why the different colour?  Was this for any RCR?  Or a certain battalion?

I watched "In Korea with Norm Christie" yesterday, and I could almost picture my father in some of the video clips they showed.  And now I need to know more  Smiley.

I'm sure I'll have many, many more questions, and thank you in advance for anyone who can help me out.

Hi Tracey,

I can answer the question regarding the beret. Its actually a maroon beret and it is representative of an Airborne soldier which is a paratrooper. This would indicate that your Dad was a paratrooper in one of the jump companies of the battalion. Of you have any pictures of him in his uniform he should be wearing jump wings on his chest.

Hi Jerry, and thank you!  Yes, dad was a paratrooper.  I have his wings, along with his medals and hat badge. His service record indicates that he attended jump school in 1954.  So that explains the beret.  And thank you for correcting me about the proper colour name.  I think I always heard it called the "cherry berry", and I just thought if it as "red".

Another question, if I may?

Can anyone tell me what "X-8 list (2cau)" and "X-4 list (2cau)" might have stood for on a service record?  I have been told that it usually had something to do with severity of wounds, except that my father wasn't wounded, at least not physically.
