Hi-sorry have to start again,
My name is Dave Lenathen and I joined the army on January 23rd, 1986. After completing battle school we were posted to 1 RCR Dukes company. My memories of Dukes-or 1RCR for that matter are not fond.
The day after we arrived they sent us to Meaford for MILCON 86. Anyway after about a month in Meaford we headed back to London. Then after a few weeks we went on another exercise called VULCAN FALL in Meaford and Borden. Another waste of time but we did'nt know it because we were new. After a few weeks we again returned to London and had a couple of weeks in garrison before they sent us to Ipperwash for TQ3 courses. Another 4 or 5 weeks away--it sucked. Then leave(thank god).
After Christmas we headed once again to Meaford for what was for me my first winter ex. What an eye opener this was--we had a four man section and half way through our MCPL went down--his feet hurt. So there we were-3 men pullin the tobbogan and of course I had a C-9. And after the ex the MCPL-I think his name was ______wrote us all bad because we were new-but we finished the ex-sore feet and all. I'll never forget him makin me carry the soup bag with my C-9 and him fallin down almost crying because his feet hurt. Most of us new guys wondered what we got into.
We than headed back to London for one month and than headed to Fort Drum. Second winter ex-all I remember is that it snowed and then it rained and we could'nt do anything. We got back to London on the 4th of March and than on the 1st of April we left for RV87.
RV 87 was really the first real army thing we did--a bit realistic. I'll never forget ________ because he gave me drill when I was on defaulters in 88 and all the time I was thinking here is this loser given me drill because I did something stupid and if they knew what he did he would have been out of the army--I hope you read this.
Anyway to make a long story short most of the guys I joined with got out after the three years-unless they went to the Airborne or 3RCR.
3RCR The real army--this is what I joined for. Made the best friends of my life. When we went in the field we actually did something. Full platoons good NCO's great guys.
Thinkin back most of the guys that stayed in 1 RCR never really learned a thing about soldiering. And they had no idea what an expieriance we had in Germany. Even to this day if you spoke to one from 1 or 2 RCR that missed out on that time they are still extremely jealous. Hammelburg, Hoenfells, Senalager. Vogelsang, Bitch, Calw, Nagold, and finally Yugoslavia.
We were the first in-and did alot of good,in very bad circumstances. Thank god I was trained by 3RCR and not the other two battalions.
Our NCO's and Officers were first rate and the guys were the best. I could probably compare us to the guys that are in Afghanistan right now-although I know they are much better trained than we ever were. But we did more than ok-we set the example for the troops that followed us.
Every guy I am still in contact with is proud that he served with 3RCR. A better bunch of guys you'll never meet. Ask anyone who served in this time period and you won't hear 1 or 2 but how professional 3 RCR was.

Many of the guys who served in 3 RCR came and went back to the other two battalions. So if you had a bad experience it had nothing to do with the people around you. Maybe you were not cut out for non mech ops. Who knows. What I know is that 3 RCR had a more senior bunch of Jr NCOs because of the term of the posting. But keep in mind that they came and wne back to the other battalions. How long did you serve and what are you doing now?

Mike I served for 9 years and in all three battalions--so if you think I stated something false tell me what it was-no better battalion than 3RCR 1988-1993--prove me wrong. I served with all three battalions--did you Mike. And I must say at the time I served with the other two they were nowhere near as proffesional as the 3rd battalion.
What i'm doin now is getten money from Veterans Affairs because I actually saw a littke action--you Mike.

Well, Dave, BJ, i too consider myself a proud Royal even tho i was never legally ,a badged Royal , that badge was in my head and heart, and still is.On never knows all things, i do know that iwas ,and am very proud of all members of the First and Finest, the only Bni got to serve with, and i do find it very disconcerting that one would lay out a put down to any of those fine soldiers.. and many of them too, did serve in actual combat, many i knew were 2nd war and Korea vets.. and they never fussed about anything, just got it done and done well...as of a modern era, well, 1st Bn served in Cyprus during and after the Turk Invasion War in 74-75.. and some paid with their lives, several were badly injured, and i must say ,while in garrison at Wolseley, i never experioenced anything but the highest professional standard by all the troops, and great pride in doing so.. but i will say thanks Dave, for allowing me a focal point to say these things. ranrad

I was lucky I guess. When I was posted into 1 RCR. (from Airborne Regt.) I went to Dukes coy. 1pl under Willard MacIssac. Best Warrant I ever served with, worked for, or anything. ANYWHERE in the RCR or Airborne. Never served with 1RCR before or after. But its the people you serve with, not the battlion. My two cents. Respects to all. Bill

Having served with all three Btn's I'd have to agree with Dave the third was the most professional, but as stated earlier it
also had a very good corps of senior NCO's...
The beer and bratwurst may have also played a role in my time with them..not to mention the nude quarries..

I only served in the 2nd and 3rd. Even tho my time in the 2nd was only 1 year, I had a great Pl Wo in Joe Bennett. My CSM was the best I had in Stu Mossip. My CSN in M Coy was.... well little can be said. All in all i think the 3rd just had access to far better training facilities like Hammelberg, Hoenfels, etc.
I think the problem with 1st might have been no ready access to a training area therefor any exercise seemed like a CF.

I take it that you are Dave Lenathan's son. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he originally from the Black Watch. As to your comments about 3 RCR being the best, in my opinion any Canadian infantryman is the best. I served in 2 CDO in Edmonton when it was composed of RCR and PPCLI. Jerry Robertson was there as well as many other members of 1 RCR like Bob Buist. We didn't have any regimental loyalties there...only to the Airborne. I was in Germany in the EARLY 80's when D Coy from the first came over en masse and replaced Mike Coy. They fitted right in. What's your point?

I take offence with your comments made on 1 RCR. Having served with the 1st, and 2nd Battalion and 3 Mech Cdo, qualifies me to have my say as well. Wow, joined the Regiment in 1986, that about explains to me why you have no ideal of what you are talking about. All Canadian Infantry Regiments have proven themselves in battle many years before a young punk like yourself was given the opportunity to solider in one of Canada's finist REGIMENTS, THE ROYAL CANADIAN REGIMENT, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Battalions. Don't ever forget it.

Hello all fellow Royals;
I just read what I wrote Last weekend over again and man do I feel embarrased. I would like to appoligize to anyone I might have offended--I realize that I was really out of line. Had me a few too many bowls of loudmouth soup and since I had no one to talk too decided I would do some talkin at the computer.
I cherish the days from 1 RCR, and met some very good buddies there as well as in the other two battalions and would'nt trade those memories for anything. I guess if I could erase what I wrote I would. Can imagine most of the guys on here have regretted saying something at one time or another. So I hope you will give me another chance and not hold that garbage against me. Someone called me a punk and I agree that night I was talkin like a punk. Please forgive me.

Hello again,
Just wanted to say that yes my father Dave Lenathen was in the Blackwatch as well as 2RCR, 3 Mech and 3RCR. He retired in 89 and now he and my mother run a small resteraunt in rural Manitoba.
