This is a very famous place from WW II, they made a movie about it.  The guy with Jan Boyd was quite the athlete in the Bn.

Well, I think it was the summer of seventy nine on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Mike company, en mass, was enjoying some r and r after extensive training up in Sennalager. Although somewhat hazy, did we check out Soest on the same trip? And that huge statue thing, Herman the German?  I remember the fellow beside Jan's athletic achievements but I'm damned if I can recall his name... Who was the other kid? the marathoner? Man. did we ever run a lot in those days, eh Rudy?

Yeah Mike, it was while we were up at Sennalager that we went on that little day tour. We went to Soest and drove past old Fort York, I can't remember Herman the German, it's been awhile.  The guy with Jan Boyd is Tony Lambert.

Tony Lambert! Of course. Herman was this huge statue thing that sat on a hill in some dinky town between the dams and Sennelager. As I recall, we only stopped long enough to take pictures... In fact, his name might not even be Herman... hmmm, might have been a different time. We were up there quite a bit.
