This little story goes out to [then] MCpl Slaunwhite, ADP 1981. Please feel free to pass it along to him, with my apologies.
Germany, 4 Wing Baden, Baden, O Coy, ADP Platoon: A week or so, prior to leaving for Canada in the summer of 1981, my Det Comd, MCpl Slaunwhite and I, had a discrepancy in regards to a small incident…well I’m here to set the story straight.
Cpl Jodi Sherritt, and I [Cpl Dave Brydon], were heading back to Canada in the summer of 81, and a few of the boys decided to take us out for a beer…or two, perhaps three, maybe four… Anyway, the next morning, my door comes crashing open, and all I here is, Dave, Dave…Slaunwhite is looking for you, and he’s pissed…get up. It was about 08:45 or so. Well, still shaking the cobwebs from the night-before, I flew into action: first step was to come up with a covering plan…and I just happened to know the receptionist at the Dental Office, so I dashed over, and she booked me in.
The only problem was, I had just seen the Dentist the day prior…well, smelling of beer, the dental officer, took one look, and barely a breath, and said…I just seen you yesterday….yeh, well, I just wanted to make sure you didn’t miss anything…get the hell out of here; the point was, he would remember seeing me that morning <smile>.
My next step was to sign the sick parade book at the Battalion OR; first mistake, which I’m glad to say no one caught…the times went something like this:
07:00 Pte Bloggins 07:10 Cpl Billybob 07:14 Pte Guy 07:16 etc…. 07:30 etc…. 07:05 Cpl Brydon (…not to bright that morning, must have been that 3rd beer <grin>) (Remember this was about 09:30 or later by this time)
Then off to the Coy OR, to sign in; I asked the Cpl Admin Clerk for a sick chit, and began to fill it in…ah, the Doctors name…scribble, that looks good…done!
It’s now coffee break, and I’m starving, so into the foxhole for a bratwurst and bun. Almost finished when MCpl Slaunwhite comes screaming into my face…Your on charge Brydon…but, but MCpl, I told you yesterday that I had Dental appointment, you can ask Cpl Bruce here…Terry Bruce was the guy who woke me up…
Well, I barely made it into the platoon room, when TSM O’Quinn, asked me what I had done, and said that CSM Dave Cann, wanted to see me at the Coy Office. From the time I entered the HQ building, I don’t think my feet touched the ground…if anyone remembers Dave Cann, I’m sure they can attest that he could give drill. I’m now standing in front of the OC (Archibald), with the CSM on one side, and MCpl Slaunwhite on the other. The OC reads off the charges, and asked me if I have anything to say. Well Sir, I’m a little confused, I told MCpl Slaunwhite yesterday, that I had a dental appointment today, and when he confronted me at the foxhole this morning, I reminded him of that.
The OC…Sergeant-major, can you check on that; a couple of minutes later, CSM Cann walks back in, and confirms that I was at the Dental Office that morning, that I signed into the Bn OR sick parade register at 07:05 <grin>, and he had my sick-chit in his hand, which he gave to the OC.
OC…Cpl Brydon, your dismissed, MCpl Slaunwhite stay were you are!
As I’m walking back to the button, I have a big smile, thinking I just pulled-off a small coup, and I here this bicycle coming from behind; WHACK!!...right across the back of my head…as I spin around TSM O’Quinn has his pace-stick pointed at my face…good one Brydon, that’s what I like…quick thinking. I don’t know how you did that, but the main thing is that you got away with it. As he starts to ride away, he’ says…but if you ever try that with me, I’ll shove this pace-stick up your @#$.

Good one Dave, and man, quick thinking! Reminds me of an old buddy, Larry N. with the First in the early '80's; Larry (and now yourself) amazed me with his lightening quick thinking - many a times I thought Larry had buried himself up to his eyeballs in a whole heapin' load of s***, but he always had a quick response (even though most knew it was all b***s***) to keep himself out of coveralls, marching with-hands-breast-pocket-high, and shining kiwi / garbage cans for 14 days! -gerry
