Glenn Johnston who went through basic with Mount Sorrel Pl in 1960 says hello to everyone. Glenn spent a couple of years with the Royals, then transferred to RCE. Jim Vail and Don Walder were two of his pals,while serving with 1RCR. I had the wheels in those days a 51 Ford, and would think nothing of pulling out of downtown Ipperwash on a late Friday afternoon,after numerous dress inspections on the parade square, and head for Carleton Place On. Some of the guys who used to travel with me were CD Charlebois, Eric McClymont, Glenn Johnston, Don Campbell, Glen Acres. I must say it was great to get away from the old chicken coop for a day or two. Sadly, CD Charlebois and Don Campbell are not here anymore.

Hiya, Earl . . .

I went through basic in Mount Sorel Platoon in 1960, but don't remember you. Jim Vail's is the one name that popped right out at me and I still remember that tall rebel very well. He flunked us out on our first pass-off parade attempt by firing a 'palm to the inside' salute at the inspecting officer as the rest of us slammed past all polish and starch with thoughts of leave and postings to follow what was otherwise a dazzling performance of military precision. Jim and I boxed once as we competed for place in a boxing competition. I think I might have come up to Jim's belly button, but he was so busy clowning around (dancing from foot to foot and tapping me on the top of my head - first with one glove and then with the other) that I managed to get a blind whack in and the next thing I saw was Jim's two big feet sticking up in front of me.
I lost track of Jim after basic. I went to 1 RCR in Ipperwash - he did too, I think - but we got separated. Other names I recall are Mike Bond, Pete Collette (who drove everybody in our room nuts at night by constantly grinding his teeth as he slept), Dave Liberty (who Lives in St. Catharines), Dave Walker (from Whitby), Don Totten (a big, kindly Native Indian fella), a guy named Angel, another named Peltakangus (the filthiest soldier in the Canadian Army at that time. He got a 'Regimental Shower' for flunking us in a quarters inspection by having all of his smelly washing stuffed into his footlocker). One corporal I remember went by the name of McNeil and two Sergeants I'll never forget are Sergeants Baker (aka 'Sgt. Rock') and Sergeant 'Peacock' Paquin who looked a little like Richard Berton and loved to strut about, swinging his mace as master of the 1st Battalion Drum Corps in Ipperwash.
If you see or talk to Jim . . . give him my best. The 60's were great . . . I think. Of course that may be because they're so far away now that I don't remember much but the fun stuff.
