Sgt Darcy Tedford died Saturday morning while escorting a road construction project outside of Pashmul in the Panjawaii district of Afghanistan. Rest in peace, Sergeant, Rest in Peace.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the deaths of Sergeant Darcy Tedford and Private Blake Williamson:
"It is with great sorrow that I extend my condolences to the loved ones of Sergeant Darcy Tedford and Private Blake Williamson on behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians.
"Sergeant Darcy Tedford and Private Blake Williamson were killed on October 14 when their unit was attacked by insurgents near the new roadway project in the Panjwayi area of Afghanistan.
"This road is being built by the Canadian Provincial Reconstruction Team and other Canadian units in partnership with Afghan officials, and is part of the ongoing development and reconstruction process that Canada is engaged in.
"It is with courage and heroism that Sergeant Darcy Tedford and Private Blake Williamson have sacrificed their life to bring stability, democracy and peace in Afghanistan.
"Three Canadian soldiers were also injured in the same incident. I know the prayers and thoughts of all Canadians are with their family and friends during this sad and difficult time.
"The Government of Canada stands proudly with our men and women of the Canadian Forces, as they devotedly continue this mission to help Afghans establish a better life for themselves, while also protecting us from the global threat of terrorism."

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Oct. 15, 2006) - The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today on the deaths of Sergeant Darcy Scott Tedford and Private Blake Neil Williamson:
"The Canadian Forces mourn the deaths of Sergeant Darcy Scott Tedford and Private Blake Neil Williamson who paid the ultimate sacrifice yesterday in Afghanistan.
"No words can express the grief of family and friends when loved ones are lost.
"My heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Sergeant Tedford and Private Williamson. We also hope for a speedy recovery of those injured today.
"Sergeant Tedford and Private Williamson were killed when their unit was ambushed near a road development project in the Panjwayi area of Afghanistan, west of Kandahar.
"This road project is vital to local development and progress.
"The risks involved in our mission in Afghanistan are present, but the men and women of the Canadian Forces remain committed to the mission to help Afghan people establish a better future.
"Canadians support and commend their determination, and I am forever grateful for the sacrifice of Sergeant Tedford and Private Williamson."

'A great kid' from Earltown
Slain soldier grew up in N.S.

The Nova Scotia parents of a soldier killed in Afghanistan made the sad journey to Ontario on Monday to see their son’s remains returned to Canada.
Sgt. Darcy Tedford, who grew up in Earltown, Colchester County, was one of two soldiers killed in a Taliban ambush Saturday. The married father of two young girls, ages five and seven, lived at CFB Petawawa, 170 kilometres west of Ottawa. But he is remembered fondly by family and friends in the Truro area.
"He was a very nice fella," cousin Bob Tedford said. "He was very interested in hunting and fishing and stuff like that, as any kid is out in the country."
Sgt. Tedford and Pte. Blake Williamson, both of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, were killed Saturday as they patrolled a road being built by Canadians west of Kandahar.
Sgt. Tedford, who was born in Calgary, had been in the military for 14 years.
"This was his second stint in Afghanistan," said Bob Tedford. "He was a very dedicated soldier."
Sgt. Tedford, in his 30s, had also done a tour in Kosovo.
"He was very fit — not a pound of fat on him," Bob Tedford said.
When the soldier’s grandfather, a veteran, died several years ago, Sgt. Tedford wore his dress uniform to the funeral.
"He looked very sharp in it," Bob Tedford said, noting his cousin got married in his dress uniform in 1997.
Edna Matheson taught Sgt. Tedford at Sunday school in Earltown.
"He was a great kid," she said. "He was sparkly and full of life."
Friends remembered him as someone who never sat still for a moment.
"Everybody liked Darcy," Ms. Matheson said. "He was fun-loving."
When he was growing up, Sgt. Tedford was fond of both the martial arts and practical jokes, said his cousin.
"He was a jokester," Bob Tedford said. "He’d get home from school before his mother would get home from work and he’d hide behind the door on her. He’d grab her from behind and, not throw her on the floor, but put a backflip jiu-jitsu hold on her and have her down on her back on the floor before she knew it. He wasn’t serious. It was just a fun thing."
Gerald Steeves lived across the street from the soldier’s family in Earltown. His sons played with Darcy when they were growing up.
"He practically lived at my place," Mr. Steeves said Monday.
Sgt. Tedford had only been in Afghanistan for a few weeks, he said.
"It kind of floored me for a minute, but I knew he was over there and I kind of expected it anyway, to tell you the truth," Mr. Steeves said. "There’s so much of it going on over there now. But I hated to hear it, that’s for sure. . . . He made a damned good soldier and everybody is pretty proud of him."
Mr. Steeves spoke to Sgt. Tedford’s father, Robin, over the weekend.
"He was pretty worked up, but he said he was very proud of his son and he said (Darcy) knew that something could happen, but he didn’t care, he wanted to join it."
Sgt. Tedford’s parents, Robin and Paulette, who live on Penny Mountain, north of Truro, headed to Ontario on Monday morning to see their son’s casket carried off a military plane.
"Like any family, they’re taking it pretty hard," said Bob Tedford, who visited the soldier’s parents shortly after hearing of his cousin’s death.
"They were in shock. I think they had done a lot of crying about it before we got there."
Sgt. Tedford’s older brother, Jody, who lives in Montreal, was also expected to attend the ceremony.
"They were very close," Bob Tedford said.
Forty-two Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.
The Truro area has suffered heavy losses recently in Afghanistan.
Cpl. Christopher Reid was one of four Canadian soldiers killed in attacks near Kandahar on Aug. 2. Warrant Officer Frank Mellish was among four more Canadian soldiers killed Sept. 3 in a fierce battle with insurgents near Kandahar.
"I don’t know how to exorcise my feelings," Bob Tedford said. "But I just don’t agree with them guys going over there and getting killed."

Me, Darcy (standing high)& the boys.

I met Darcy 14 years ago when he was in St.John's, Newfoundland going to Marine Institute doing Navy Training. I have Pictures of us at a friends wedding. He wore his tie around his head the whole night; almost all of them did.... What a laugh! He was the one to make a joke of just about everything. I don't remember him ever being grumpy. He always kept us laughing, even if it was only a silly face he'd make at us! He was a good friend and he'll be sadly missed! Rest in Peace "TEDDYBEAR".....We'll miss you!

I also met "Teddy Bear" when I was still a civvy at Memorial University in Newfoundland. He was definitely one of the most fun-loving, positive people I have met. Nothing could ever get him down!
I am grateful for having had the opportunity to know him, and am thankful for the good times he gave us all.
In this saddest of moments, he has managed to bring many of us old friends back together again - still being a positive influence on all of us.
My love and prayers to Charmaine and the family.

Darcy was one of my best friends in high school, he was a great friend. I have many happy memories of those years. I am so proud of the ultimate sacrifice that Darcy made, he will always be a special a friend to me. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Darcy was a great friend, throughout elementary and high school. We all came from the very tight knit class of 1992 at NCHS...and Darcy was definitely a classmate that kept things humourous, to say the least. While many considered him quite the prankster, looking back, we'll remember him for so much more than just his humour...his kindness, his smarts,his love of the outdoors, his judo, his nicknames, our nicknames, and the way he always kept us laughing. Many of the memories I'll never forget include watching him dance his way through the crowd to "Life is a Highway" at graduation. As the song goes...there's a world outside every darkened door where the blues won't haunt you anymore...where the brave are free and the lovers soar...
So many people will remember Darcy and smile, because we had the chance to know him. We're so proud of him for fighting for the freedom of others.
He was a great guy.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his old friends, his new friends, and his comrades.

Interment ceremony of Sergeant Darcy Tedford

OTTAWA —The interment ceremony of Sergeant Darcy Tedford of the 1st Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, will be held October 23, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa.
As per the request of the families, media may attend to view the ceremony, though no interviews will be given.
Sgt Tedford and Pte Blake Williamson were killed when their unit was ambushed near the new Panjwayi development road, at approximately 3:10 pm (Afghanistan time), October 14, 2006.

OTTAWA — Sgt. Darcy Tedford’s widow gently stroked her husband’s beret and medals as he was laid to rest Monday at the national war cemetery.
Family, friends and comrades from the Royal Canadian Regiment gathered at the graveside under a grey sky to pay their last respects to the soldier, following a private funeral service.
With her two young daughters by her side, Charmaine Tedford was presented with her husband’s beret, medals and the Canadian flag that had been draped across his coffin.
No family members or friends spoke at the burial, but Charmaine and daughter Kaeleigh touched the coffin in a final tearful farewell.
Tedford, 32, grew up in Earltown, Colchester County. He and Pte. Blake Williamson were killed in Afghanistan on Oct. 14.
They were patrolling a road west of Kandahar when their unit was ambushed by Taliban insurgents, who fired a flurry of rocket-propelled grenades and small arms.
Several Canadian soldiers have died along the stretch of road, which is under construction in the Panjwaii district.
Tedford, based at CFB Petawawa, Ont., was remembered by friends serving overseas as a quietly confident soldier with several deployments to his credit.
In an interview shortly after both men were killed, Capt. Ryan Carey said Tedford could be relied on for wise advice.
Forty-two Canadian soldiers, including seven Nova Scotians, and one diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.

I want to thank all of you for sharing your memories of Darcy and for honoring him. He is the love of my life and not a day has gone by in the almost 13 years that I have known him that he has not been the centre of my universe. We were the absolute best of friends. Our little girls are so proud of him and all his boys and are still praying daily that no more of his friends are hurt or killed. They understand what an important job our soldiers are doing in Afghanistan. We are so grateful for the love and support of our family and friends, especially the 1RCR family. They have truly made this ordeal easier to handle. Thank you so much for your support. On Novemer 11th, we will remember all their sacrifices and honor each one of them as the heros that they are. Charmaine. I was hoping so very much that you and your family would one day visit this site and see our words. I'm sure once the lads return this thread will grow in leaps and bounds as those who served with Darcy in Afghanistan have the time to pay tribute to their loyal friend and comrade in arms. Rest assured, Charmaine, that we too shall remember Darcy and our fallen brothers in arms on the 11th of November and that this year's Remembrance ceremonies will, for Royal Canadians throughout the world, be a particularly sorrowful day. I shall join your children in prayer and, in my way, pray that He blesses you, Charmaine, with grace and strength during these sad times.

Greetings fellow Royal Canadians, relatives and friends of Sergeant Darcy Tedford.
I have just received a very nice note from Darcy's mom and dad that a memorial for Sergeant Tedford will be held December 2nd at one in the afternoon at the Truro Nova Scotia armoury.
A reception will be held afterwards at the Truro legion on Brunswick Street.
Additionally, the Tatamagouche Legion is honouring Darcy's sacrifice by adding his name to the local cenotaph and laying a wreath.
I would request all Royal Canadians in the area to attend the ceremonies as the family will be present.

To all our RCR family,
I just wanted to let you know there has been a slight change to the time of Darcy's memorial. It is still Dec. 2nd at the Armeries--2pm followed by a reception at the Legion on Brunswick st. Truro N.S. ( 3:30 or so ). This will allow time for those who have far to travel. I also want to let you know how much we appreciate all the love, support and compassion we have received from 1RCR as well as all members of the military. We couldn't have made it without you. God bless and keep you all safe.
