This is a clip from our local newspaper today:
Students and staff at Western College in Stephenville are wearing RED on Fridays to show their support for Canadian Troops fighting overseas. Student Jackie White organized the move as she has a son-in-law scheduled to start serving in Afganistan in December. College official Ian Stokes is also encouraging other college employers to sign off an agreement to allow reservists special privileges such as deferred exams and other benefits.

We are going to have to support the troops because Ottawa isn't.
Published: Monday, October 09, 2006 OTTAWA -- The Harper government will not change a controversial policy that cuts off danger pay for wounded soldiers once they leave a war zone such as Afghanistan, Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor said Sunday.
To do so would open the government to lawsuits, he told CTV's Question Period.
"When a soldier is sent over to the Kandahar area they receive a high-risk bonus, and they also do not pay income tax for the period they are over there," he noted.
"We have no intention of changing the high-risk allowance rules," he said. "If you are in a high-risk area you get paid, if you are out of the high-risk area you don't receive it."

Hi Ken: Well, that is all well and good, but SOME KIND OF REASONABLE FINANCIAL SUPPORT MUST BE FORTHCOMING....this sounds like moreof the same old""" got what we want out of them so to hell with them.....no wonder young guys do not want to join....go to Afghanistan or some other hell hole , get crippled or worse killed and your immediately thrown on the slag heap. What is going on here. Gen Hillier gave his word and he best keep it, no matter whos cage he has to rattle. These heroes need tobe treated as such, not losers because they are wounded/crippled...come on gove. wake up or get out of the business... thanks for the incite ken, but it does not surprise me, nor do i think it surprised you or many other vets.. ranrad

Hey Ranrad
I agree completely!!!When we send our troops over for an offensive campaign, the Government needs to make damn sure they are supporting them completely, including financially. How convenient for the gov to stop the risk pay if a soldier gets wounded in battle, what a great way to save a few bucks. Typical, kick a guy when he is down!! If they is any time when a soldier could use the extra coin, it would be when he is layed up in a hospital bed. And I'm sure they're quick to give some of these brave heroes the boot on a medical discharge for fear it too expensive to keep them around. Our government needs to get off their asses and support these dedicated soldiers fully, not partially. These brave men and women are doing the job this country has asked them to do and deserve to be compensated fully. Our soldiers deserve the danger pay regardless!!!

A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"
|
Heres an update....
Change overdue
IT HAS TAKEN a complaint from a dad, angry about the Canadian military’s treatment of his injured son, to trigger a review of how wounded troops are dealt with.
DND’s top brass is re-examining its policy of cutting off "operational allowances" for injured Forces’ members. Such allowances – totalling $2,111 a month for troops in the field – are paid to cover the hardships and risks of missions such as the one underway in Afghanistan. The additional money can boost a soldier’s pay by more than 30 per cent.
However, the extra payment is withdrawn for any soldier injured and removed from Afghanistan. That happened to Jeffrey Hunter, who last week survived an attack west of Kandahar that killed two of his fellow soldiers. Transferred to a German hospital for treatment, Pte. Hunter was soon informed he no longer qualified for the allowance. Worse, the young soldier was told this as he lay in pain from his wounds.
The policy and the way it was enacted for his son aren’t sitting well with Pte. Hunter’s father. Bill Hunter is demanding Ottawa immediately change the policy, which he says is unjust for wounded soldiers and their families. "He’s in a lot of pain and I’ve got someone from the military going in and telling him they’re not going to give him his danger pay … this is not right."
Indeed, the policy is far from right, nor is the way it was enunciated for the injured soldier. Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor and Gen. Rick Hillier, the chief of defence staff, have ordered a thorough review. But Gen. Hillier says the restrictions on danger pay won’t be changed, only that DND will find a way to replace the lost payments.
No matter what bureaucratic route is chosen, such an obvious grievance must be swiftly and fully addressed. Their lives in constant danger, Canada’s troops serving in war-torn Afghanistan deserve compassion, and the backing of their political and military bosses.
