Country singer to perform benefit for Randy Payne's children
TRENTON (Staff) -- Canadian country singer Julian Austin is doing a benefit concert to raise money for the education funds of the children of a fallen soldier.
A concert at the Canadian Forces base in Trenton on Friday, September 22 is to raise money for Tristan, 7, and Jasmine Payne, 5, whose father, Corporal Randy Payne, was killed near Kandahar, Afghanistan on April 2.
The show, organized by the Trenton base, also features the McDonough Band and Colonel Angus and a demonstration by the Canadian Forces parachute team, the Skyhawks. Advance tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at www.corporalpayne.ca or by calling 613-847-0041. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Soldier's family moved by ceremony

GANANOQUE -- The town and legion here have ensured that a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year will not be forgotten in the place where he grew up.
A ceremony that accompanied the addition of Corporal Randy Payne's name to the town's recently restored cenotaph was held in front of the town hall Sunday afternoon.
Approximately 100 people, including the Payne family, military police officers, RCMP, Gananoque police, OPP, the local cadets corps and local dignitaries Gord Brown (Leeds-Grenville MP), former Leeds MP John Matheson and Gananoque Mayor Jim Garrah gathered in the sunshine for the event.
"This ceremony commemorates the addition of Corporal Randy Payne's name to the Gananoque cenotaph," said Gananoque Legion member Ron Knapton.
Payne was 32 when he was killed with three comrades by a roadside bomb near Kandahar, Afghanistan on April 2. His name has been added to that of 58 First World War and 25 Second World War veterans killed in combat.
It was important to both put Payne's name on the cenotaph and hold the accompanying ceremony, said Bill Beswetherick, spokesman for the Gananoque Legion.
"It might mean closure for the family," he said.
Payne's family, including his widow Jody (Hitsman), their two children Tristan, 7, and Jasmine, 5, his parents, David and Nancee Payne, his brother, Christopher, and in-laws attended. They were presented with medallions to commemorate the event.
"It was excellent," said David Payne of the ceremony. "It was an honour. It was touching. I can't say much else but it was good."
Time doesn't diminish the pain of losing his son, Payne said. "It just keeps bringing it back."
There are two more events to honour the fallen soldier in the next couple of months.
A tree will be planted in honour of Randy Payne along the Remembrance Road (County Road 5) in Mallorytown on November 3 and he will be recognized in Remembrance Day ceremonies, his father said.
Randy Payne's widow, Jody, moved from Wainwright, Alberta with her children in June. Earlier this month, she moved into a house in Mallorytown, where she grew up.
"It was moving, it was beautiful, it was an honour," she said of the ceremony. "We're all very proud of him."
"The death of Randy Payne reminds us of the cost of war," said Knapton.
"We rededicate this cenotaph in September, a month that during two world wars saw 22 local men killed in action. We trust that Randy's wife and children, his parents, his brother, and all who knew him take some comfort from the knowledge that his sacrifice will be remembered."
Payne was born in Lahr, Germany and moved to Gananoque where he attended elementary and high school and played junior hockey. He later worked at Brock Telecom in Brockville and lived in Mallorytown where he was a volunteer firefighter.
He enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 2003 and was posted in Wainwright, where he was a military policeman. He was sent to Afghanistan in 2006 as a bodyguard for the Southern Regional Commander.
A biography of Payne has been printed and will be added to 10 newly printed copies of Gananoque Remembers, a book published last year to commemorate the war dead.

Poignant tribute to Randy Payne

MALLORYTOWN -- Randy Payne chose Mallorytown as his home and the community ensured he won't be forgotten in an especially poignant Remembrance Road ceremony Friday.
Payne, a corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan last April 22, was honoured during an annual service inaugurated in 1999 to recognize 18 servicemen who died in the First and Second World Wars.
"Until recently, Front of Yonge (township) has not lost anybody in combat for over 60 years," Captain Tom Burton, an instructor in the cadet reserves, told a crowd of close to 400, including 280 students from the local elementary school.
Burton, a retired fire chief, knew Payne well as a volunteer firefighter and said his "infectious personality and laugh" are well-known by people who came in contact with him.
He said the loss of Payne brings home the reality of war and makes the memorial ceremony "a little less remote and foreign."
"Randy is now a chosen son of the community and will forever be remembered here."
The annual ceremony is held along a stretch on County Road 5 where each serviceman is honoured with a red maple tree, an iron cross and a plaque inscribed with personal details.
A 19th tree now stands at the end of the row, with a plaque and cross unveiled by Payne's children, Tristan, 7, and Jasmine, 5, who are schoolmates of the assembled students.
The children were accompanied by their mother, Jody Payne, Randy Payne's parents David and Nancy, his brother Chris and other family who had a place of honour during the ceremony.
Nancy Payne said the tribute was special.
"It was a beautiful, beautiful ceremony. Very moving," she said.
She said the family has attended a number of ceremonies to honour her son, including the unveiling of Payne's name on the Gananoque cenotaph, where he was raised.
While it can be hard on the family, Nancy Payne said they appreciate how much Randy meant to people he touched.
"It's very hard. It just brings it all back but it's wonderful what people are doing and what they have done. It's a tribute to Randy."
Born in Lahr, Germany and raised in Gananoque, Randy Payne moved to Mallorytown to raise a family with his wife, who grew up in the village.
After being laid off from a Brockville job, Payne joined the military police and was stationed in Wainwright, Alta., when he volunteered to serve in Afghanistan.
Arnold Herder, a spokesman for the Mallorytown Legion which conducts the annual service, said the loss of Payne is a stark reminder of the cost of war.
"It's just the fact that people are still (waging war)," said Herder.
"We really haven't had anything like this for quite a while. If you're in the service, you know that you can be called anytime."
Leeds-Grenville MP Gord Brown, who acted as master of ceremonies, urged people to thank the veterans in their midst and encourage them to share their memories so they won't be lost to succeeding generations.
"Pass on the torch of remembrance. Help us share your story and your legacy."
Similarly, it's important for the public to show their respect to Canada's veterans during occasions marking Veteran's Week, said Brown.
"We owe our veterans a tremendous debt. A debt that can only be repaid by acts of remembrance."
