The Company Smoker

I once tried to explain to my young wife (my first of three) what it was we did in the field before coming home that often resulted in a black eye, bruised knuckles or just a bad hang-over.

I told her it was the tradition of the company smoker. Having never finished High School and being but a young soldier, the best I could come up with was that it was a catered party, in the field, where we'd have a few too many little brown bottles and settle any disagreements or hard feelings before heading back to the civilized world.

We even did it on winter ex...what a tradition.

I recall one in particular. Sennellager, April 3rd, 1982... Mike Company, 3RCR, myself and Captain Furlotte's birthday just happened to fall on the same day. Great time, lots of grog, hell, we even had cake!  Wink

Joe Henry is a saint in my books.

Joe Henry Huh Huh

Yes, Joe Henry. You see, a young snot nose Pte, with only about a year more time in the Joe (the Pte would have been me), and not to respectful of the fact that Joe had come thru as a YTEP, was giving Joe the gears one winter ex.

Joe is a saint because he didnt' kill me, when he probably should have and definately could have.

On another note, the one that actually brought me to this site, are you guys feeling the same way I am...that I should be over there doing something?

I know what you mean about being a liability as i expressed similiar views earlier of another thread. You would be impressed to know that you are not alone, brother, and that the fire stills burns within many of us. Let me know how you make out and, of course, good luck!

John ,Mike; this not to say you HAVE to reup ,but i still think both of you, and likely many others could provide sound training for young guys and that , maybe the government is again missing the boat here. Even tho' you, John, had remustered ,i am sure you have not lost the edge needed to train real people for real army life. But ,this is just an opinion and i do not wish to encourage any of us older farts to do something we dont/cant. Each one would have to decide what they can do, and of course the gov. and DND would have to first wake up to the expertise they have out there.. and maybe , God forbid, make a decision at the begiinning, rather than the latter part of 5 years.. do not doubt that you guys do have a lot to offer, ranrad

I had looked into joining the militia a short while back. We have two infantry regiments, a service battalion and a Armored Recce Squadron in the city.

With my experience and very, very stale 031 TQ5B, I'd probably go back as a cpl, which still puts me on the heavy end of platoon weapons. I'm only 41, and still whole, but my knee's and shoulders can sometimes reflect my age. Sitting at a desk has caused more damage to my body than anything else I've done.

Armored recce is appealing, you get to put your ruck in the truck and the machine gun is mounted, lol....I have no qual in that trade though, so my options are pretty much go in as a skilled technician, maybe remuster to flight engineer and get into a TacHel sqn.

We got to the battalion in Aug 03 and went of leave for a couple weeks, came back and left for Pet. At that first smoker I was simply in shock to see the CSM, you know who it was, taking a few rounds out of one of the one hook privates, he would have been from around the time you guys came in. Had a year or two more TI than us. Can't remember his name, pretty wife.

There was another one in Pet where 3 of us got sent to the brigade hospital to sleep it off, they thought we had alcohol poisoning.

Hey.... you guys got to learn how to drink responsibly!!!!!
bwahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa....

ie, take a break before someone had to reattach your ear to your kneee....

I have a funny tale about the walking wounded and, while it may have not been a smoker, it was the night after the lads returned to Hugie after reforger....  3 RCR, baden soelingen, I'm living in Hugie with my ole lady and, after you know what happens when the lads return after many weeks in the field, we eat, have some wine and head out... to Tiffany's... CJ (Adp, and thats all you get as we are in the no name, no pack drill zone) is living in the apartment above us and lordy, he's got himself a hottie...  Now those of you who might guess who CJ is, and there are many, know ole CJ from PEI was, by da lord tunderin Heyzues, a guy like to scrap. Iver seen him in action, he's one of those giys that feeds on getting smacked in the head....  and by Gumbo, he was pretty good at it too! Had those eyes that turned all black when he was ready to go..... anyhow, if memory serves me correct, and it may not, we come back from reforger and all the frenchies, (French soldier from Rastatt) have been infringing on our God given right to rule Tiffany's in our absence.

Hottie, Royal Candian man, interloper, need I say more?Huh Anyhow, holy freakeroolie, its good one. Lots of frenchies, lots of Royals, lots of blood, victory was ours!!!!

Anyhow, CJ hit this guy who's been hitting on his woman so hard in the head the knuckle in his hand, middle finger where it joins the digit, pops freaking out and lands on the f'n floor right beside Frenchies now prostate form.... I sheeet you not, theres freaking hole mid fist where da knuckle is supposed to be!!!! Anyhow, as if it's just another day in paradise, he picks it up, sticks it in his pocket, has a couple of popcorns and goes to the base hospital. By then, well, a few of the lads have shown up for stitches and what not and the hospital staff is kind of whizzed..... Anyhow, he goes to the desk, says he thinks he broke something... the nurse, captain, to whom we shall refer to as sister she had so much time in, says the doctor will decide whats broken and whats not....... CJ reached into his pockert, pulls out this bloody hunk of cartalige and tosses it on the counter while, concurrently,  holding his bleeding hand in her face... Ole sister nearly, well, you know!!!!!

Holy crap, what a night....

Hey John, if the CSM is who I think it is (use to say after a few brew, after he took his teeth out " Before these hit groung, I'l f!#$in' drop ya!"- Best CSM I ever had; use to call me and another guy 'banty roosters'  (Geoff knows who the other guy was - good for sucker punches - right Geoff; ie ear?) Actually John you probably know the other 'guy' TL

CJ reached into his pockert, pulls out this bloody hunk of cartalige and tosses it on the counter while, concurrently,  holding his bleeding hand in her face... being an xmedic, Mike, I would have loved to have seen the expression on the old matron's face for that one!

you got the CSM down alright. I remember another 'event' where WO Bentley and LT Robinson had the good sense to take us all DOWNTOWN for a x-mas dinner/bash and at a german restraunt. The CSM accompanied, of course.

Well, before the end of the night damn near the whole platoon was outside roughing it up with each other, locals, bouncers etc...the call to battle was the famous removal of the teeth....I think Bentley may have started it all by taking a bouncer from the bar to task....
