Passing of MCpl Jeffrey Scott Walsh - A Royal Canadian
« on: August 10, 2006, 06:13:43 AM »

The following was received from CO 1RCR Rear Party and has been distributed to the Regiment:

Quote
Once a Royal, Always a Royal!!  For those of you that did not know, MCpl Walsh only recently re-badged to the PPCLI.  Joining 2 PPCLI in the summer of '05 he spent most of his career before that as a soldier in 1 RCR.  LCol Lavoie was also his company commander in The Duke of Edinburgh's Company.  Although 2 PPCLI will be taking good care of his wife, three young children and parents in Shilo and Regina respectively, 1 RCR soldiers will honourably receive MCpl Walsh in Trenton upon his repatriation.

Always to be remembered for his duty and sacrifice, and now the ultimate sacrifice, for which man can give no greater to the world and his comrades. Thank you for your dedication and duty, may the family and friends find some solace in this, your greatest sacrifice for the good of man, ranrad

We hear the word "hero" a lot today, and while I can say at times it may not be right to use it in many situations, I believe the greatest use of the word is when someone lays their life on the line for a greater cause than their own life.

Deepest condonlences to the Walsh family.

A ROYAL CANADIAN "NEVER PASSES A FAULT"

Re: Passing of MCpl Jeffrey Scott Walsh - A Royal Canadian
« Reply #15 on: August 11, 2006, 07:27:57 AM »

REGINA -- Choosing words that his young children could understand, Jeff Walsh told them -- and other Canadians, too -- about fighting "monsters."

The army master corporal wanted to put into words that anyone could grasp his reasons for the presence of Canadian troops in far-off Afghanistan.

So he wrote a poem, got permission from his superiors and shared it with the public in February, when he was training for an second deployment to Afghanistan.

Among the lines in Monsters in the Dark are:

"I know that they are out there;

I will not be ignorant anymore,

Pulling the blanket over my head

Will not keep them from coming ashore,

Instead, I choose to confront them, as afraid as I might be,

Because if I don't stop the monsters our children can never be free."

Walsh got back to Afghanistan this week -- but tragically died in what military officials described as an accidental shooting around noon Wednesday, Kandahar time.

Only 33, he leaves his wife, Julie, and three young children.

He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based at CFB Shilo, Man.

His parents live in Regina.
