Newsletter - Kingston Branch of the RCR Association
« on: June 14, 2006, 07:46:20 AM »

The following newsletter was received from MGen W.M. Holmes, President of the Kingston Branch, and now Colonel of the Regiment:

Kingston Branch of the RCR Association

Royal Canadians and your good ladies:

I have been out of the loop for a while so I thought I would try and capture a number of points in a short news letter for dispatch to you electronically and by snail mail for those who are not connected.

Events

Pachino 10 July 2006

The next event that I encourage branch members to support is the annual Pachino Day commemoration with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Belleville. For those who have not attended before it is a well organized affair with Hasty Ps and Royals joining together to remember the success and sacrifice of our respective Regiments on 10 July 1943. There is a parade at their cenotaph in front of the Pinnacle St Armoury in Belleville followed by the usual spaghetti lunch. There is a small charge for the lunch. Attendees are asked to muster in the Armoury at 1030 and things will unfold from there. Those who plan to attend will have to get there under their own steam. Dress is blazer, flannels, Regimental tie, berets and medals or jacket and Regimental tie with medals and berets. I am not able to attend as I will be attending Pachino at the Home Station in London. No RSVP required.

Jack and Jean O'Brien's Annual BBQ 20 August 2006

This year Jack and Jean will host their BBQ on Sunday  20 August. The form has not changed. Dress for the event is very casual and there will be great steaks and all you can eat corn on the cob and salads. Bring your ladies, own drinks, lawn chairs and sufficient cash to cover the cost of $15.00 a head. Start time is 1400 or sooner if you wish to get a head start. Jack is located on Kingston Mills Lock Road just East of Montreal Road and West of Hwy 15. You can't miss the barn and signs. RSVP to Jack and Jean please by email or to 549 7120 by the 13th of August.

Annual/Paid up Member National Association Dues

We have run the Branch on a no fee/pay as you go basis for a number of years. It has always been understood that those who wish to join the RCR Association National would do so of their own choice and volition. I encourage all of our members to join our National Association as they need the support of all of us to carry on with the many activities they sponsor such as the annual bursary program, the distribution of Pro Patria (the Connecting File has been renamed Pro Patria with the RCR web site now called the Connecting File-see below), contributions to the Museum and with the deployment of two RCR Battle Groups to Afghanistan programs, support to our troops, etc. Annual dues are $25.00 and a paid up membership for life is $225. I have just become a PUM as it is easier than trying to remember to pay every year. You can get the information on how to join on line at www.thercr.ca (see below) or request it from Joe Bennett the Association Secretary at 519 850 0946.

Electronic Regimental Information

I call your attention to the web site www.thercr.ca the Connecting File. This is a new web site although some of you may have already accessed it. Mike O'Leary, the RAdjt, has done a very commendable job of putting this together and although he is still in the process of building the site it is well worth a visit. You will find a link to the Regimental Association web site there and the information required to join the Association National is to be found under "who can join" I believe. The Association web site has a chat capability for those who are inclined to share war stories.

Post of Branch President

I am still looking for a replacement to take over as the President of the Kingston Branch. Tom de Faye handed over the position of Colonel of the Regiment to me on the 6th of June in Gagetown and due to the resulting Regimental commitments I am going to have to give up the Branch post before this year's Regimental Birthday as I hope to be able to spend the 21st of December with 1 RCR in Kandahar. I ask that anyone who is in a position to help out give me a call at 542 6461. It is not a demanding job as delegation allows one to step back from the fray.

I hope many of you are able to attend the above noted events. I will see some of you at the BBQ in Aug. I ask you all to consider joining the National Association, it is difficult to convince the young retirees to join the Association when the former serving are not as engaged as they could be. Have an enjoyable summer.

Pro Patria,

Walter
