Deepest sympathys and condolences to MOOKIE's family from Aldore and his family. I was looking forward to seeing him at the NS reunion in September, that was the last time I seen him during the last reunion a few years ago. He was a great Soldier and Leader which was repected by all. He was my Platoon Sgt during the FLQ which he made it interesting, educational and enjoyable all at the same time and yet very productive. Pro Patria all the way my Friend. Aldore McIntyre

I regret hearing of the passing of Mook. I served with him from 1958 until I left the battalion. He was my Section Commander and Platoon Sergeant several times over the years starting in Ipperwash, then in Germany, London and Cyprus. He was a good soldier and leader and had a terrific sense of humour. I always enjoyed working with him and looked forward to seeing him at the different functions. He contributed a lot to the Regiment and won't be forgotten by the many of us who served with him.

I'm Bill's sister and live in Tasmania Australia, so far from home right now. I want to especially thank Brian Watters for replying to my email and making this message board available to me. It means so much to me to know that so many people knew and respected my brother. He was a soldier through and through, totally committed to the RCR from a very young age. He was a bit of a rogue, my brother, and yes, he had a great sense of humour, but his integrity and loyalty could not be questioned. Thank you, one an all, for your comments and memories.

I would also like to pass on my condolences to Mooky's family .
I always remember him as the inventor of the Mooky Norman survival kit , an item he said was needed by all . Also at the final parade for the battalion in London , when he sat beside my wife and talked and narrated throughout , where all she could say was at the end was , who was that man .
He will be missed .

Barry, I'm Bill's sister and live in Tasmania, Australia.....Love your wife's comment "Who was that man?" There a million responses to that question, I hope that she was impressed with him.
I am very interested in the Mooky Norman Survivial Kit. Can you enlighten me?? Bill shared so many stories with me via mail (despatches, he called them) and phone calls over the years. Lots of yarns and many many true stories. I'm sure his 'survival kit' is something very basic and am anxious to hear what it was.
It's so sad that it took is death has to bring so many memories to the surface. I have been so uplifted by the correspondence I've had with the RCR Museum in London. So nice to hear from people who worked with Bill and knew him.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Mary Lu Brooks (nee Norman)

Mookie and I first met in Camp Ipperwash in 1962, Mook was the mortar corporal in Charlie Company of The First and I was a young "Snotty Nosed" soldier. A couple of years later Mook was the battallion Intelligence Sergeant and I was a "Snotty Nosed" Lance Corporal working for him. Mookie stayed a True Royal while I wandered off to other lands and other Regiments. Mookie and I always stayed in touch, he has visited with Kathy and I here in Jasper on four occassions, I cherish the memory of each. Mookie was an unique individual, he loved his daughters and Audrey but he CHERISHED his REGIMENT. We talked weekly on the telephone. His family have lost a loving father and brother, Audrey has lost a loving partner and I, and many other Royals have lost a lifetime comrad. As noted by Hugh Conway in the immediately preceeding post I too met Mookie in Camp Ipperwash in 1962 in C Company and later we all served together in the Int Section in Fort York. I was the IO for a time but Mookie ran the Section and tried his best to teach me the job. Later we all went our separate ways - I went back to university and then on to other things while Mookie soldiered on. We reconnected about 6 years ago and have since corresponded regularly and spoken and visited on occasions. He was my source of information on old friends in the Regiment. Only 3 weeks ago I received a "dispatch" from him talking about his travel plans and his intention to go to the Regimental reunion in NS in late summer. Mookie was an eccentric, had an IQ off the scale and was a loyal friend and a great supporter of the Regiment. As I type this posting I am looking at a sketch drawn by Mookie of the Bn CP in Soltau in the summer of 1965 which shows Bud Taylor (Ops Officer), Wayne Smith (Mortar Officer), myself, Harvey Leech and others who I cannot recall. It brings back many memories. Rest in peace old friend.

I was saddened to learn of Mooky's passing when checking in this morning. I was the IO of 1RCR in Kyrenia District HQ in the winter of 1966-67. I too had met Mooky in Ipperwash in 1962, and we all went to Germany together in that autumn - delayed, as it were, by the Cuban Missile Crisis. I very well recall being an umpire on the Section Commanders' Competition held in Sennelager, I believe in the summer of 1963, which was won by Cpl Norman, earning him instant promotion to Lance-Sergeant. He was a great soldier, a wonderful person and a large part of my education came to me through him. I will be forever grateful to him for the training he and other NCOs gave me. My most sincere condolences to his family.

I was deeply saddened when Mooky passed away. I have been offline until a short two weeks ago as I had moved and given my computer away to my grandson. I was in Ottawa when Mook passed and missed his funeral. I worked directly with Mook beginning when he was my Platoon Sgt in the Weapons platoon in C Coy in Germany in 62,..I left shortly afterwards to join the Int Sec. Several months later Jim Thistle went to Sigs and Mook took over. We were together in that Section from 1963 until 1968. Mook and I were kindred spirits and shared an odd sense of humour. I could write a book about our adventures in Germany and some of the stunts we got up to. Mook used to call me on a regular basis and I would be given a sitrep on where and how every one was. After I retired and went to work with corrections Mook would send me sitreps on the back of photographs, using them as postcards. I used to visit Elgin Middlesex Detention Center where Mook worked before he retired, and after meeting with his Superintendent I would visit Mook and have tea with him. Mook used an old brown mug that a Brit had given him in the 50's and it was constantly with him. He has probably got it now with St. Peter. Mook marched to his own very principled drum and his forthright criticisms sometimes got him into trouble. It was a joy to have been a close friend and I think of his humour every day. Rest in peace buddy. You taught me well..He never passed a fault!

It was sad for me to see that Mook past away. We served together in Cyprus 1966-67 when I was a young 2Lt on duty many days and nights in the Bn HQ CP while he was the Int Section Sgt working next door and quartered upstairs. Mook was a good soldier with a sense of humor and helpful to me on many occasions.
Thank you Mook.
