From R.T. Walsh.  My picture of George Fleury in Borden in 1959 has been up for months with no responses.  I must be going back too far for our internet users.  The young kids who joined in the 1970s (see Eli Aucoin) seem to have computers but I guess the Royals of the 1950s do not have the urge to go online.  I guess I better add 10 years to the pictures I send in and maybe will get some replies.  Pro Patria and regards to all, RT

RT !  There are numerous xRoyals who don't know that this guestbook exists , also according to others , some guys left the regiment with a chip on their shoulder , and they don't want to be bothered with anything to do with the military . I always say that when things go wrong in life , it is so easy to blame someone else . Proof in the pudding , last week while in London i phoned a guy who was in "A" coy with me in the early 60's . He knew quite well who i was , and blurted out what are you phoning me for , like what do you want . I told him i was just being friendly , but realizing i had hit a nerve , i decided to say goodbye and his parting shot was , now i can go and make supper , as though i was dirt under his feet , and it was 730PM . I realize that this was likely an isolated incident . I had no problem talking to Brian Watters , Dale Robinson , John O'Quinn , Ed Duffney , L/Col Burdett "MC", and many others too numerous to mention . I always liked the lyrics to the song by the late Gentleman Jim Reeves , "A Stranger Is Just A Friend You Do Not Know" . Hope the above doesn't offend anyone , as i have no axe to grind with anyone !!!  "PRO PATRIA"

RT ; I agree with Earl , as I have talked to many of the guys who left the Battalion  , who have a gripe , mostly because of how they were treated on departure ; No recognition at all and with the feeling that instead of trying to move on with their lives , that they were deserting the ship .

I have also talked to many who don't feel that way and are happy to talk old times . They are the ones who matter . I do understand the feelings of the other side though , as I was one of them , but get over it and as I have , try to remember the good times , because there are more of them , than bad , not to mention the ever lasting friendships developed . Out of 35 years in the Military , 9 with the Royals and 3 more as their RQMS , they are the ones I remember the best .

As for you being old , as noted on your photo challenge , that should not be a question , but a fact . Dave Boyd is the only guy around near your age , 87 years old isn't it . Donny , Doug and Dave Sewell are getting there .

I agree with MR Lewis which is not normal to start with. The years with the Royals where the best of my career, and the lifelong friends made during that time are very important. A lot of us stay intouch through this means and the phone. Some of the guys live in this area like the old fellow Dave Boyd ,Bob Conrad,Lance Camp and a couple of others we are always glad to see each other and talk over old times. And Yes Mr Lewis lives here but he was a garrision trooper so he doesnt have many war stories Roll Eyes

Well let me start by saying that young Sewell do not agree with anyone lol. Now as for my 10 years with the Royals well it was the best years of my life made some real good friends and no enemies that I know of (now that don't mean I never have any) and like Dave I keep in touch by these means,e-mail and the phone.

I recognize all the fellows on this photo but have always had problems with names.  Was with 2RCR from 1956 to 1962.  I am not totally computer literate but do manage somehow at my age.

Dear BOB Walsh

My name is Cornelius Oostrom.  I was at Camp Bordon in 1959.  These guys look like they are from D company.  I was in D company at the time and also in Kirkland Lake.  AFter that time I served as a steward in the sargeant mess.

Hello Brian,

I am going to scrape all the white stuff off of the glass!

Okay, I can see the pictures much better now.

Thanks to Don Marche, Stan Byford and Barry Lewis for their replies to my post.

I was hoping to maybe get some of the guys to post a few more photos as well as getting an ID on the two unknown troopers.

The comments are appreciated.  It was a privilege to serve with such a group of damn fine men.  In retirement most of us can forget the times when things were not too good and remember the good times and the great times.  That is probably why we tend to keep in touch with each other and go to reunions and any other events where we can compare notes with old friends.

I still believe that "there's no life like it!"

Best wishes to all, RT

Quick follow up, Brian:

I did not intend to overlook the posts of Dave Sewell, Earl Donaldson and Cornelias Oostrom in my reply above.  Its just that I have a very good memory but it is short.  When trying to write the names out I happened to forget a few (momentarily).  My apologies to all but I know that none of you could understand.  I am positive that not one of you guys ever forgets a name here and there.  Regards, RT
