June 11, on a real hot day, I went over to Carleton Place to RCL Branch 192. A dedication service took place at the outside water fountain, behind the town hall. The original service was rained out back in 2001. Jean Love Galloway, Strome's dear wife, was to make the original dedication, and was still recovering from a massive stroke, was carried up to auditorium and a blanket was placed over the grand piano disguised as the water fountain and that is how the dedication took place. Sadly Jean passed away on Aug 11,1902. Larry(Squeak)Edmonds ex RCR who lives in Carleton Place, decided to have a plaque installed honouring Jean, so he went to town council with his request, and they said go for it."Squeak" acted as MC, Padre Lyman Coleman gave the dedication address, Tom Kingston and Len Delaney carried the flags, another Royal was dressed in circa 1900 scarlet uniform with pith helmut, and a piper played the lament. The Galloway's daughters , Rosemary and Jean were present with their families, Strome's brother Charles and his wife,and WW1 flying ace Billy Bishop's granddaughter were also in attendance. After the ceremony everyone went over to the RCL branch. I sat down at the table with Eric Devlin, and then in came Steve Horan, i felt well protected sitting between these WW2 Veterans. Steve mentioned about storming ashore as a member of THE NORTH SHORE REGIMENT on D-DAY, a living hell for everyone. Somewhere on Juno Beach lies Steve's cap badge, as it fell out of his beret, or perhaps someone has it for a souvenir, perhaps it has disappeared due to time and the elements.I remarked, i don't know how you guys did it, and Steve replied we were told not to stop for anything.I believe Steve was later captured. A comrade came into the legion, and jokingly said to Steve i would like to twist your moustache, Steve replied you touch my moustache and i will twist your neck. I asked Steve about the time in Ipperwash, when Patty Paige imitated the twisting of a moustache behind Steve's back, and he turned around and caught him.Patty did 7 days CB, and i bet he never did that again.Padre Coleman has written a book about his days in the Chaplain Corps, with foreward written by Colonel Strome Galloway. The photo on the jacket is of 1 RCR in the field 1964, with Padre Coleman conducting the service. I purchased the book and Padre Coleman autographed it for me. We had a great chat, and he said he remembered me. Other Royals there were E.H. Hollyer MC, who won his MC in Korea by calling in artillery fire on his own position, stopping the Chinese in their tracks. Eric McClymont MID, Korea; Ray Campbell; RH Nutall; and others who i didn't know and didn't get their names.Everyone had a good time, and it was nice to see some of the guys, i had served with 40+ years ago. Squeak has the cutest little bulldog, and has a bulldog t-shirt to attest to the fact.Ed Meecham, if you are reading this, Tom Kingston, Len Delaney, Ray Campbell, asked about you, as i had told them i was talking to you via e-mail. The Royals that came from a distance to attend the ceremonies on a very hot Saturday afternoon, shows the affection and esteem, in which the late Colonel Strome Galloway and his wife Jean were held.Quoting an old RCL slogan "They served until death, why not we"? "PRO PATRIA"

Happen to read your article on the well deserved tribute to Col.Strome Galloway.Although I never knew Col. Galloway personally,I have read and heard of many of his exploits.You mentioned in your post of some of the finest guys i have ever served with going back to the early fifties,Deke Kingston,Lugs Delaney.Eric McClymont,Ray Campbell,Steve Horan and Squeak Edmonds,(some of the finest soldiers i,ve ever served with).It sure is nice to see some of us old buggers are still alive and kicking.Good to know you guys are still active and well.

Suggest all read Galloways books carefully!! At one time in Italy he threatened to resign his commision if he was not given command of the regimant!!
Also most of his Italian diary entries say something like "finished for the day went back behind the lines had a FEW drinks" When in cobat does not seem right that the 2ic should be "back" drinking EVERY night.

I was indeed fortunate enough to win and purchase some of his books and found them to be
a very good read. A couple of them have even been autographed so I should put them away for safe keeping.
If you have the chance pick up a copy of any of his books you'll find them to be keeprs for your library or book shelf.

Hi Hugh ,i agree with your last. I just read the entry of johng1 or whatever and i think in times like that we all would imbibe in a few. just to "take the edge off' , his statement ,to me does not show respect for the Col. or anyone for that matter, good point and thanks, ranrad.. or Andy , or Ron, full details on the members site..

Well I remember on many occasions plenty more Royals who took a drink to ward of the tension. Those who new Strome have said in the past that he was a greeat leader and was respected by all. If I drank I would toast him. Cheers!!!

Hi All
When I was RSM Colonel "Strome" Galloway came to Cyprus. We hosted him and his wife at the Wo's and Sgt's Mess and he gave a speech was funny and yet sad. I will post it and you make up your own mind.
